چکیده

In the framework of density functional theory a calculation of the orbital magnetization for a metallic magnet is carried out, obtaining it from the orbital current density. A gauge freedom inherent in this calculation is discussed. Choosing the compound U3Sb4 we calculate the orbital current density from which we obtain the corresponding magnetization in the Trammel gauge. We compare the properties of the magnetization with the properties of the f-electron and the orbital angular momentum densities.

Current-induced magnetization switching using an electrically insulating spin-torque generator

Current-induced magnetization switching through spin-orbit torques is the fundamental building block of spin-orbitronics, which promises high-performance, low-power memory and logic devices. The spin-orbit torques generally arise from spin-orbit coupling of heavy metals. However, even in a heterostructure where a metallic magnet is sandwiched by two different insulators, a nonzero spin-orbit to...

Induction of coherent magnetization switching in a few atomic layers of FeCo using voltage pulses.

The magnetization direction of a metallic magnet has generally been controlled by a magnetic field or by spin-current injection into nanosized magnetic cells. Both these methods use an electric current to control the magnetization direction; therefore, they are energy consuming. Magnetization control using an electric field is considered desirable because of its expected ultra-low power consump...

Quantum Tunneling of Magnetization in Ultrasmall Half-Metallic V3O4 Quantum Dots: Displaying Quantum Superparamagnetic State

Quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTMs), stemming from their importance for understanding materials with unconventional properties, has continued to attract widespread theoretical and experimental attention. However, the observation of QTMs in the most promising candidates of molecular magnets and few iron-based compounds is limited to very low temperature. Herein, we first highlight a simple...

Tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance in a magnetic tunnel junction with half-metallic electrodes

Tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance in a magnetic tunnel junction with half-metallic electrodes" (2016). Evgeny Tsymbal Publications. 53. Tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance (TAMR) is the difference in resistance of a magnetic tunnel junction due to a change in magnetization direction of one or both magnetic electrodes with respect to the flow of current. We present the results of first...

Impulse Magnetization of Nd-Fe-B Sintered Magnets for Sensors

Magnetization of large Nd-Fe-B sintered permanent magnets is still challenging. This type of permanent magnet is electrically conductive, so impulse magnetization causes a flow of eddy currents which prevent magnetization of the whole volume of the magnet. The paper deals with the impulse magnetization of sintered Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets and shows a method for the determination of suitable pa...
